The Satisfaction of Seeking
When my granddaughter, Kiyomi, was younger she’d have a hard time shutting off her mind to fall asleep. We would lie in bed and look out at 100-foot tall Douglas firs and we would identify the animals that we could see formed by the negative spaces. I made this painting as a tool to break up images and rework them as a game. She loved this. Finding the cool something amongst things is hugely satisfying. Embedded in the painting are images for her to seek out. Depending on which way you hang this piece, you might see a horse, the head of a bear, a Bufflehead, a Mallard or other creatures, some I may not have even intended to paint!
